Spiny-tailed monitor, Red Ackie)
This
bulldog of the monitor world posses a spectacular full body
red colouration complimented with vivid yellow and white
highlights. Native to Australia it inhabits the northwest
coast with many populations occurring further inland. The
red ackie is primarily terrestrial, but will utilize elevated
areas for surveillance and thermoregulation.
Red
spiny-tailed monitors will reach an average adult size of
50 cm SVL. Red ackies thrive in captivity and will accept
a wide variety of food. They can be housed successfully
in pairs or in groups given adequate space. This species
is very prolific and performs amazing acrobatics while chasing
insect prey. Red ackies will prove to be rewarding for any
reptile enthusiast.
