Varanus
tristis
tristis (Freckled
Monitor, Black-headed monitor)
This unique monitor with its elegant appearance
and brilliant colouration is sure to capture the attention
of any reptile enthusiast. Native to Australia it inhabits
the entire continent except for the extreme south and south-eastern
regions. This moderately arboreal species attains an adult
length of 65 cm TL and can weigh as much as 320 g.
Like most dwarf monitors this species thrives in captivity
given proper conditions. In the wild freckled monitors feed
primarily on other lizards, but in captivity a varied diet
of insects, rodents, and poultry supplemented regularly
will serve them well. Although at times shy, the freckled
monitor displays extreme intelligence and beauty making
it a rewarding species to work with..
